Discovering Shibui Surf and Skate: Brighton’s Hidden Gem

If you find yourself strolling along Brighton’s seafront, just a bit west of the bustling Palace Pier, you’ve got to check out this hidden gem tucked under the arches. It’s Shibui Surf and Skate, and trust me, it’s as cool as it sounds. Whether you’re in the market for a body board to tackle the waves or just want to snag that perfect bead necklace to rock at the beach, Shibui’s got you covered.

Now, Shibui might not be your typical ‘core’ skate shop—you won’t find an endless variety of skate brands here. What you will find are longboards and surf skates, which are perfect given its seaside location. But here’s where Shibui truly shines: it’s all about supporting the local skate scene and the up-and-coming skaters making waves (pun intended) around Brighton.

Last year, Shibui started something really cool—they began sponsoring some seriously talented young skaters. They’re dishing out boards featuring awesome, Japanese-inspired graphics designed right in their own backyard. Thinking back to when I was a grom dreaming of sponsorship, I can only imagine how stoked these kids are. It’s about more than just free gear; it’s about believing in these young skaters and giving them a real shot.

The Shibui team is a roster of young shredders like  Sonny, Arthur, Sapphire and Ethan, each bringing their own flair to the pavement. Oh, and there’s Milo , who was part of the crew until his recent win at the under-16s category at the Level comp—talk about going out on a high note!

Even though it might seem like just a few boards, for these kids, it’s huge. It’s not just about the physical boards; it’s about the support and confidence that Shibui instils in them. And let me tell you, the impact is both immediate and impressive.

Curious to see these designs or the skaters in action? Head over to Shibui’s  website for a peek at their boards, or check out their Instagram for some clips of their skaters ripping it up.

It’s places like Shibui that go beyond being just a shop. They’re part of the community, helping to shape the next generation of skaters. So next time you’re near the beach and hear the clatter of skateboards, swing by Shibui Surf and Skate. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or new to the scene, Shibui is a place where you can feel the passion and maybe even catch the skate bug yourself.
